Indonesia seizes Iranian and Panamanian oil tankers for illegal oil shipments

Indonesian authorities said today that they have seized two Crude Oil tankers, including the Iranian MT Horse and Panamanian MT Freya, because they are suspected of illegally transporting oil in Indonesian waters.

Indonesian authorities said the two tankers were found off Kalimantan (part of Indonesia’s Borneo Island) yesterday and were seized after the crew failed to respond to radio calls.

Indonesia’s Maritime Safety Agency (Bakamla) said the crew was suspected of a series of violations, including failing to display the ship’s national flag and turning off its identification system to avoid detection and illegal oil shipments.

We seized two foreign oil tankers yesterday and are investigating,” said Wisnu Pramandita, spokesman for Indonesia’s Maritime Safety Agency. The people on board are being interrogated.”

Iran has previously been accused of concealing its oil sales to circumvent U.S. sanctions that have caused severe damage. Last October, then-President Donald Trump‘s administration offered new sanctions against Iran’s oil industry for selling oil to countries such as Syria and Venezuela.
