A former adviser to former U.S. President Donald Trump says Trump has said more than once that he wants to run for president again after losing the 2020 election.
Last weekend, former U.S. Ambassador to Germany Ric Grenell said on conservative media outlet Newsmax, “Donald Trump is still the head of the Republican Party, there’s no question about that. He’s still the most popular political figure. He will decide, what he wants to do.”
“He has told me personally many times that he does want to run again. We’ll see if that stays intact and how that happens. I think we still have a long way to go.” Grinnell added.
Soon after the election, speculation began that Trump might run again in 2024. Grinnell said polls show that Trump remains popular among Republican voters, which is one reason he should not try to raise a new party.
“Clearly, Donald Trump is a Republican and should run again as a Republican.” Grinnell said.
Trump could become the first U.S. president to be convicted under the articles of impeachment as the Senate plans to hold an impeachment trial in February. If the Senate convicts Trump, it could choose to disqualify him from holding public office again. Some Democrats say this is one of the reasons they want to impeach Trump. They are also considering using the Constitution to bar him from holding public office.
Trump told reporters after he left office last week that he would somehow make a comeback, but did not elaborate. On the day Biden was sworn in as president, Trump also told supporters, “We’ll be back in some form.”
Earlier this month, another former Trump adviser, Jason Miller, said Trump would campaign for Republican candidates in the 2022 midterm elections.
“President Trump will make sure we take back the House in 2022.” Miller said on “War Room.”
“He’s got a lot of money. He’s the most well-known figure. He’s going to get this done.”
House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said at a recent press conference, “(President Trump) has had a lot of great successes in office, and he’s brought people into the party who weren’t part of it before. He should continue to be engaged in that way.”
Appearing on Fox News Channel last Thursday (21), McCarthy added that Trump “still has the ability to lead and unite” the Republican Party even after he leaves office.
