Sarah Sanders, former White House spokeswoman for the Trump administration, announced Sunday, Jan. 24, that she will run for governor of Arkansas in 2022.
Sanders, a Republican, is the daughter of former Arkansas Gov. Michael Huckabee (R). She previously served as former President Trump’s White House spokesperson from July 26, 2017, to the end of June 2019. President Trump suggested she run for governor of Arkansas right after she left the White House in 2019.
President Trump tweeted at the Time, “She is a very special person with extraordinary talent who has been incredibly good at her job. I hope she runs for governor of Arkansas, she would be very good.”
Sanders has been a Trump supporter. She tweeted after Trump left office on Jan. 21, “Thank you for a lifetime of friendship, for the opportunity to serve our country, and for your lasting accomplishments over the past four years. God is in control and America is still the greatest country in this world and we must pray for our country and its leaders.”
Sanders had also criticized the Biden administration’s decision to cancel the oil pipeline project with Canada, arguing that the decision would have cost Arkansans many good jobs.
Arkansas is a Republican stronghold. The state’s federal legislators are all Republicans, and both houses of the state legislature are also Republican-majority. In the 2020 election, all six of the state’s Electoral College members are supporting Trump.
The state’s current governor, Asa Hutchinson, who was elected in 2015, has served two terms as governor and will not be able to be re-elected.
There are already two Republicans running for Arkansas governor in 2022, but Sanders has a better resume than either of her opponents. Sanders published a book last year, and she is also a contributor to Fox News.
No Democrat has yet run for Arkansas governor in 2022. Arkansas’ gubernatorial election will be held on Nov. 6, 2022.
