Hong Kong police broke into CUHK at night to investigate the opening day clashes.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong confirmed that the New Territories South Regional Crime Unit entered the campus on Monday night (25) with a court warrant to investigate and search for evidence in a criminal case on January 11, and the university immediately sought legal advice to understand the situation from the police.

CU campus radio Facebook live clip shows that a group of plainclothes agents Monday night to the dormitory of CU and Sound College search evidence, the process lasted about an hour, until about 10 p.m.. The officers used an A4-size plastic bag to take away some of the items, and CU security was also present. In addition, the police also went to Sun Heng College and Wu Yee Sun College to search for evidence. A student wearing a red sweater was escorted away from Lee Kwok Wai Hall in Sin Heng College.

The student union said on Facebook that at least three CU students were arrested, including the chairman of the interim administrative committee of the student union, Jonny Au, and several of the arrested students were taken back to the police station. The Student Union expressed regret that the police had again arrested CU students on a large scale and entered the CU campus to search, and condemned the university for refusing to deal with campus security issues and choosing to repeatedly call the police to arrest students.

The police said that three people, aged 19 to 22, were arrested in Sha Tin, Tsuen Wan and Sheung Shui districts on suspicion of “unlawful assembly” and “assault with intent not to do something”.

CUHK will not comment on individual cases as the case is under investigation, but reiterated that the university will not tolerate illegal and violent incidents on campus, and will fully assist the police in their investigation.

On January 11, the opening day of the new semester at CUHK, CUHK Campus Radio reported that several masked men in black shouted “No Show Card” at the CUHK security checkpoint opposite Exit A of the MTR University Station, calling on students not to show their student ID cards to the security guards. During the period, a number of black-clad masked men pushed down the iron horse at the University Square and threw white powder at the security guards before fleeing. A large number of police officers and firefighters responded to the call and cordoned off the scene. In the incident, a 55-year-old security guard’s eyes were hit by white powder discomfort sent to hospital. After the men in black left, some CU students helped pick up the iron horse.

The university issued a statement afterwards, condemning “the attack on front-line security personnel and the disruption of campus facilities”. The eight student organizations were dissatisfied and issued a joint statement that night in response, expressing strong condemnation of the university for reporting students to the police again, a biased description of the incident, and questioning the excessive power of the security guards.
