More and more Republican lawmakers oppose impeachment of Trump

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will submit the articles of impeachment of former President Trump to the Senate at dusk on Monday (25), and the Senate will begin a trial in the second week of next month at the earliest. The Democratic Party now controls the Senate, but more and more Republicans oppose impeachment, I believe Trump was convicted of little chance.

The Democrats launched a second impeachment against Trump after the riots on Capitol Hill, accusing him of sedition and planning to invoke the 14th Amendment to the Constitution to bar him from running for president again in the future. If the Senate were to convict Trump, at least 17 Republicans would need to fall in line. Congressman Rubio bluntly said the trial was stupid, unproductive and harmful to the country, making the bipartisan split white-hot and voting to end impeachment at the first opportunity.

Republican Senator Cotton previously argued that the Senate has no constitutional authority to convict Trump after he leaves office, and now more and more party members feel the same way, believing that many Americans find it strange that the Senate would spend Time trying to convict and remove an outgoing president. However, there are still some Republican senators who agree with impeachment, including Romney. He believes that what the outside world has seen is Trump inciting rebellion, an impeachable offense. He was also the only Republican who agreed to Trump’s impeachment when he was first impeached the year before.
