Two weeks after the explosion at the Qixia Gold mine in China’s Shandong province, rescuers successfully rescued the first person Sunday, Jan. 24. The miner was extremely weak. It is reported that he was previously on the lost list. Ten miners who had contact with the surface were then raised one after another. There may still be 9 people missing. One person is known to have succumbed to his injuries.
According to Reuters, 11 people were lifted out of the Qixia gold mine today. The first miner to be rescued was not one of the 10 people who had been connected to the surface, but was trapped closer to the surface than the 10, according to Chinese official media quoted by AFP. Footage from China’s CCTV shows a huge drilling rig lifting a small forklift out of the ground and the rescued man, too weak to stand, being carried out blindfolded.
Of the 22 trapped miners, there may still be nine who have not been heard from. One more person on the lost list is believed to be located 100 meters deeper than the location of today’s first rescued miner, where the water level is rising.
The explosion at the Qixia gold mine in Shandong province on Jan. 10 blocked off the shaft and cut off communications. Rescuers have been busy rescuing workers trapped several hundred meters underground and threatened by rising water levels.
The 10 miners who have been heard from were previously trapped 580 meters underground. Rescuers brought them Food, Medicine and telephones through a pipe dug into the rock, using wire conduits, enabling them to regain their strength.
