The Communist Party’s cold treatment of Wuhan on the first anniversary of the closure of the city from Xi Jinping down to the official media almost silent

Today marks the first anniversary of the Wuhan city closure, and the pneumonia (novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19) outbreak in Wuhan, China, is still burning, but the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), from Xi Jinping down to the official media, either did not mention it or reported it in a positive way, leaving only the Chinese netizens talking about it.

According to comprehensive media reports, on the first anniversary of Wuhan’s closure, except for CPC leader Xi Jinping, who did not mention a word about it, the major official media, such as Xinhua News Agency, People’s Daily and CCTV, also remained silent, while Xi Jinping’s talk at the fifth plenary session of the 19th Central Commission for Discipline Inspection was, not surprisingly, placed in the top headline section.

The Chinese media outlet Xinjing Bao was one of the few to mention the first anniversary of Wuhan’s closure, and published an editorial titled “Wuhan’s ‘City Closure’ First Anniversary: Living up to the Hard-Won Anti-Epidemic Achievements”, but the content was nothing more than praise for the authorities’ epidemic prevention, exclaiming “Looking back on this thrilling ‘war on epidemic’, with Wuhan’s ‘city closure’ as the nodal point, the whole nation has launched a fierce race against the virus and, supported by strong faith, has made a world-renowned achievement”.

Although the Chinese Communist Party did not officially mention it, many Chinese netizens posted on Weibo, “It’s the 1st anniversary,” along with media reports from the previous year, praising and denigrating the Communist authorities’ effectiveness in fighting the epidemic, but encouragement and recognition still prevailed.

Current affairs commentator Zhong Yuan wrote an article, pointing out that “important days are deliberately ignored by the Chinese Communist regime, and the Chinese Communist Party media treats them as if nothing has happened”.
