Following the departure of Trump-appointed U.S. International Media Agency (USIMA) Executive Director John Parker, the new U.S. President Joe Biden appointed Taiwan-born Kelu Chao as the acting executive director of USIMA, which is responsible for U.S. foreign broadcasting, making her the first female head of the agency.
The U.S. International Media Agency is an independent agency of the U.S. federal government responsible for foreign broadcasting, and is responsible for managing the Voice of America, the Cuban Broadcasting Office, and other units, as well as overseeing nonprofit organizations such as Radio Free Europe and Radio Free Asia.
After graduating from the Department of Journalism at National Chengchi University in Taiwan, Kluo Chiu went to the United States to pursue a double master’s degree at Kent State University. She then joined Voice of America for over 20 years of service, serving as a reporter, editor, Hong Kong beat director, head of the Chinese language network and East Asia division, and acting chief of the station. His last position was Director of Programming at Voice of America.
Former USAGM executive Michael Pack, a conservative filmmaker and staunch Trump supporter, was appointed last June and immediately fired or suspended five senior Voice of America executives, including Carol Chao, who jointly went to court to sue Pack for interference in news coverage.
The Biden Administration called for Parker’s resignation as soon as he took office yesterday, followed by the appointment of Carol Chao as acting executive director. Although the International Media Agency noted that Biden would soon appoint a formal chief executive, Cho’s first day on the job was marked by the thunderous dismissal of Voice of America Director Riley and Deputy Director Robbins, who were appointed by Parker last December.
Chiu’s father was former Vice President of Taiwan’s Central Daily News, Chiu Ting-chun, and when he passed away, the then Ma Ying-jeou administration awarded him a commendation for his contributions to Taiwan journalism.
The former director of Taiwan’s representative office in the United States, Shen Lvchun, revealed that when he presented the commendation to Chiu Ting-chun at Twin Oaks in Washington, the entire Chiu Family was present, and he attended a dinner with them that evening, and his impression of Chiu Keh Lo was that she was very professional, and they also talked about the war against Japan and the past of retreating to Taiwan. As for the new position of K.L. Chao, Shen said that the Biden administration has appointed two women of Taiwanese origin to government positions, the other is trade representative Dai Qi, coupled with the fact that Biden had contributed to the World Journal during his campaign, showing that Biden is very familiar with Taiwan.
