TikTok, the international version of Chinese short video App Jitterbug, has recently started circulating a “coma challenge,” but the dangerous activity killed a 10-year-old girl in Sicily, Italy, and Italian authorities have ordered a total ban on unverified age users.
According to Reuters, Italy’s personal data protection agency said that despite TikTok’s promise to ban children under 13 from signing up, the rule is easy to break. Italy stressed that TikTok must block all unverified accounts, and the blocking order will last until at least Feb. 15.
The death of the 10-year-old girl has shocked the Italian nation. Her Parents revealed that their daughter had been taking part in a coma challenge before she died, and had used her cell phone to film her own challenge record. The Italian prosecutors are now investigating whether it involved abetting a light-hearted death, and to determine whether she was invited to participate in the challenge, TikTok has not yet made any response to this.
