The coronavirus outbreak in Mongolia has sparked a political crisis, with protests erupting in the capital over dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of a mother and baby infected with the disease. The prime minister took responsibility for the mistake and resigned.
Mongolian Prime Minister Khuresukh Ukhnaa tendered his resignation to parliament on Jan. 21, which was accepted with immediate effect.
According to an AFP report from Ulaanbaatar, a popular demonstration broke out in the capital Ulaanbaatar on Wednesday. People protested against the mishandling of a woman and her newborn baby infected with coronary pneumonia at the National Research Center for Infectious Diseases on Jan. 19. The medical staff’s practices lacked humane care.
“Unfortunately, in transporting the mother from the hospital where she was treated, to the isolation center, we made a mistake,” Mongolian Prime Minister Hülzholsukh said at a news conference. “As prime minister, I must take responsibility for this mistake.”
Mongolia had won praise for its Epidemic prevention in the early days of the outbreak, according to Reuters. But the recent entry of an infected driver from Russia has led to a renewed outbreak in Mongolia, leaving the country overwhelmed.
