The Iraqi capital Baghdad yesterday (21) two suicide bomb attacks, the death toll rose to 32 people, at least 110 people injured, Thursday’s attack is also the first large-scale suicide bomb attacks in Iraq in the past three years, the Islamic extremist group “Islamic State” (IS) later admitted involvement, authorities believe that this incident may represent the Islamic State will make a comeback in Iraq.
The Iraqi Interior Ministry said the first bomber detonated a bomb in the capital’s Tayaran Square after claiming to be unwell and attracting the attention of a large number of people in the market. As more people flooded the scene to assist the victims, another person also detonated a bomb. The incident left at least 32 people dead and 110 injured, the Ministry of health said, the victims died on the spot at the site of the explosion, most of the injured have been treated and returned Home from the hospital.
The Islamic State issued a statement in the early hours of this morning (22), admitting its involvement. The Islamic State has faded from Iraq after its defeat in 2017, with suicide bomb attacks in Baghdad gradually declining, and authorities believe the incident is a sign that the Islamic State is restarting operations in Iraq. Tahsin al-Khafaji, spokesman for the Iraqi Joint Operations Command, said the incident was a terrorist attack carried out by remnants of Islamic State soldiers, who wanted to prove “their existence” after being suppressed under repeated military operations.
International condemnation followed the bomb attack, with Iraqi President Barham Saleh saying the government would stand firm against hooligans trying to destabilize the country. The European Union called the attack “barbaric and senseless” and reiterated its full support for Iraqi authorities in the battle against extremism and terrorism.
UN Secretary-General Guterres called on Iraqis to reject any attempt to spread fear, violence and undermine peace, stability and unity. The UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) expressed its condolences to the victims and stressed that such “despicable acts” will not stop Iraq’s progress toward stability and prosperity.
The attack was the bloodiest in Iraq in three years, with reports of a suicide bombing at the souk in Baghdad’s Taylan Square in January 2018 that killed at least 30 people and injured hundreds more.
