Four Chinese fishing boats involved in cross-border fishing seized by South Korea, 48 crew members arrested

South Korean marine police have also seized a number of Chinese fishing boats in the past.

The South Korean Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries reported Thursday (21) that authorities recently seized four Chinese fishing boats suspected of crossing the border to fish illegally in South Korean waters, and a total of 48 crew members were arrested. According to the report, the arrested crew members are currently under investigation, the authorities confirmed the charges, will be charged with deposit and other measures, the fishing gear involved and 39 tons of fish will be confiscated and destroyed.

According to the report, the four Chinese fishing boats are two pairs of double trawlers. The two boats, each carrying 10 crew members and displacing 115 tons, were seized on Wednesday afternoon (20) at a point about 38.9 kilometers northwest of Hoju Island in Sinan-gun, Jeolla South Province, and their nets violated the rule that the mesh size should not be smaller than 54 mm and used multiple gill nets.

The other vessels, Liao Da Zhong Fishing C and D, were seized in the afternoon of the same day at a point about 111.1 km northwest of Jagui Island in Jeju Province. The pair of fishing vessels were suspected of omitting to report their catches and falsely recording their fishing logs. Both vessels had a displacement of 219 tons each and were carrying 14 people each.

In order to avoid the spread of the new crown Epidemic, South Korean law enforcement officers have been avoiding boarding and inspecting the vessels, but some Chinese fishing vessels are maliciously taking advantage of the epidemic and fishing illegally, so the authorities will strengthen boarding and inspecting the vessels while strictly preventing the epidemic to protect South Korean fisheries resources.
