European Parliament passes resolution condemning China’s crackdown on Hong Kong pro-democracy activists, calls for sanctions against Carrie Lam

The European Parliament passed a resolution on Thursday condemning China’s crackdown on Hong Kong democracy activists and calling for sanctions against responsible Chinese officials, including Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor.

It is reported that members of the Parliament also publicly expressed their dissatisfaction with the EU’s previous economic, trade and investment agreement with China, criticizing the move for the EU’s loss of credibility on human rights issues. The motion calls for action against police violence in Hong Kong and sanctions against the responsible Chinese and Hong Kong officials.

A statement from the European Parliament said the resolution calls for the immediate and unconditional release of the pro-democracy representatives recently arrested in Hong Kong and the withdrawal of all charges against them, including Wong Chi-fung, Lam Long-yen and Chow Ting. The European Parliament also urged EU countries to impose targeted sanctions on Hong Kong and Chinese officials, including Carrie Lam, the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, under the EU’s global human rights sanctions regime.

The European Parliament also stressed in the resolution that it will carefully review the EU’s economic, trade and investment agreements with China, in which China’s human rights situation will be an important consideration.
