China sanctions Trump officials, Biden spokesman calls for bipartisan condemnation

The National Security Council of the new Biden administration said today that China’s sanctions against U.S. officials on the eve of the Trump administration’s departure were “futile and cynical,” calling for a bipartisan condemnation.

Reuters reported that the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced sanctions against 28 members of the Trump Administration, including former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, on the inauguration day of new U.S. President Joe Biden in Washington, D.C.

In a statement, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said, “China has decided to impose sanctions on 28 people who have seriously violated China’s sovereignty and bear primary responsibility in China-related issues.” The officials and their Family members will be banned from traveling to China and Hong Kong and Macau, and companies associated with them will not be allowed to do business in China.

Emily Horne, a spokeswoman for the Biden Administration‘s National Security Council (NSC), told Reuters, “The choice of Inauguration Day for the sanctions seems to be a bipartisan attempt to stick a needle in the eye.”

She said, “Americans of both parties should be united in their criticism of this futile and cynical move. President Biden looks forward to working with leaders of both parties to put America ahead of China.”

Pompeo continued to blast China in his final week in office. He claimed yesterday that China has committed “genocide and Crimes Against Humanity” against Uighur Muslims.

In response to Biden’s Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s statement yesterday that he agreed with Pompeo, Hua responded that she hoped the U.S. side would look at China and U.S.-China relations correctly, work together with the Chinese side, focus on cooperation, manage differences, and push U.S.-China relations back on the right track to move forward. This is in line with the common interests of China and the United States, and is also the general expectation of the international community.
