New President Joe Biden arrives at the White House after being sworn in. He said former President Trump left him a “very kind letter” before he left office.
Biden, sitting behind the Oval Office fortitude table, said he would not reveal the contents of the letter out of respect for Donald Trump.
“The president wrote a very kind (very generous) letter,” Biden said.
“Because it’s private, I’m not going to talk about it (the contents of the letter) until I talk to him.” He said.
That was the only question Biden answered from reporters.
The Resolute desk, a desk made in the 19th century and placed in the Oval Office of the White House, has been used as a desk by U.S. presidents many times.
One of the traditions of Presidential Inauguration Day is for the outgoing president to write a letter to his successor, offering his best wishes and advice. The letter is usually placed on the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office of the White House for the new president to read when he or she first steps into the Oval Office.
The Washington Examiner said a White House aide would not say whether Trump drafted the note on his last night before leaving office or whether he wrote it before leaving the White House on Wednesday.
Trump also received a letter from outgoing President Barack Obama on the day of his inauguration in 2017, which Trump called “a beautiful letter.
Melania Trump also left a “welcome note” for Jill Biden, sources close to the situation told CNN. It is not clear where Melania left the note for Jill, nor is it clear exactly what it said.
Biden also told reporters that he signed many executive orders during his first appearance in the Oval Office. He said the actions were meant to fulfill a promise to the American people that “on a lot of things, we’re going to need legislation.”
President Biden signed three executive orders on camera, including an executive order requiring masks across federal industry, an executive order ensuring racial equality, and an executive order rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement.
Biden is scheduled to sign 17 executive orders in his first few hours as president.
On Wednesday morning, President Trump left the White House and flew from Washington, D.C., to South Florida, where he was greeted on landing by supporters who came to show their gratitude to Trump, who is returning from office.
Previously, Trump had revealed that once he left the White House, he would choose to live in the Sea Lake Estates (Mar-a-Lago) resort.
