U-Haul releases an annual migration trends report that counts the number of one-way U-Haul vans entering and exiting a state throughout the year. Last year U-Haul handled more than 2 million one-way van rental transactions.

Tennessee came out on top for the first Time in 2020, moving in 50.6 percent of one-way U-Haul vans moving in or out, a 12 percent increase over 2019, while moving out increased only 9 percent annually over the same period.

From 2016-2019, Texas and Florida were first and second in net increases in one-way U-Haul trucks, with Texas taking the top spot for the first three years of the period and Florida surpassing Texas for the top spot in 2019. And last year Texas came in second and Florida third.

California is at the bottom of the pack in 2020, trailing Illinois and New Jersey. California has hovered between the bottom one and three since 2016, while Illinois has never escaped last place or the bottom two since 2015.
