U.S. Rep. Swalwell nominated as Trump impeachment manager amid Communist spy scandal

After the Capitol Hill incident on the 6th of this month, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to impeach President Donald Trump, and the nomination of Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell, who was previously rumored to have unusual ties to Chinese Communist spies, as manager of the impeachment case has raised questions.

According to Fox News, on the 6th of this month, Trump supporters flooded Capitol Hill, causing an emergency evacuation of members of Congress from both the Senate and the House of Representatives who were meeting in a joint session that day, and killing several civilians and a police officer in the incident. A week after the incident, many federal congressmen launched a second impeachment against Trump on the grounds that he had caused the unrest, and sent the impeachment case to the Senate for impeachment trial at the end of Trump’s current term.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) nominated Swalwell as the manager of this impeachment case to attend the impeachment trial in the Senate. In response, Swalwell said, “It is a great honor to be nominated as manager of the impeachment case.”

Swalwell, a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, was previously exposed as having an unusual relationship with Chinese Communist spy Fong Fong. Swalwell’s office later issued a statement clarifying that Swalwell had provided Fong’s information to the FBI a long time ago and had not seen Fong in six years.

Swalwell has not been charged with anything as a result of the controversy, but his nomination as manager of the impeachment case still provoked ridicule. Mollie Hemingway, senior editor of the Federalist, said, “I can see that the Democrats are more serious about impeaching Trump this time than they were the first time, because Adam Schiff is not the impeachment manager, but …… Swalwell.” Andy Craig, a member of the Cato Institute, a U.S. think tank, tweeted, “Pelosi could have nominated a Republican committee chairman to be the impeachment manager… . the only reason they want the impeachment to fail is to nominate Swalwell.”

The current impeachment will be led by Democratic U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland, while eight U.S. Representatives, including Swalwell, will serve as co-impeachment managers.
