Officials: FBI warns finding bomb maker is a top priority

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) warned law enforcement agencies Tuesday (19) that the person who made the pipe bombs and placed them near the Capitol on the 6th has not been found, and said it is “imperative” that the person be found on the eve of Biden’s inauguration, according to a U.S. law enforcement official.

The law enforcement official, who was briefed on Biden’s inauguration security, said the FBI also warned other law enforcement agencies on Tuesday that they feared the person was still active and could be trying to build more explosive devices.

The attack on the Capitol on June 6 came as law enforcement found two pipe bombs just blocks apart, one outside the Republican National Committee headquarters and the other outside the Democratic National Committee headquarters. In the days since, federal officials have made it clear that both pipe bombs were legitimate destructive devices with functioning components.

Federal authorities “safely disposed” of the bomb devices and did not detonate them. The FBI lab in Quantico, Virginia, is analyzing the components of the devices.

According to another senior federal law enforcement official, the pipe bombs are still the subject of open investigations and are being closely monitored by federal authorities. “Each explosive device tells a story,” he said.

Because the components of the devices remain in good condition, authorities will be looking for identifying marks, such as how they were made and where the fuel was obtained, and for similarities to thousands of other devices in the federal database.

Authorities would like to speak with one person associated with these devices. There are some photos of this person, but notably, his or her face is completely obscured in the photos.
