Missouri Republican Sen. Josh Hawley (R).
Missouri Republican Senator Josh Hawley is facing continued pressure over his challenge to the U.S. presidential election results. On Saturday (16), Loews Hotels issued a statement canceling a Hawley fundraiser at its hotels that was scheduled for February.
The fundraiser, a family-oriented event organized by political action committee Fighting for Missouri, was scheduled for Feb. 12-15 at the Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando Resort in Orlando, Florida, with Hawley as the special guest.
The organization raised more than $272,000 for Hawley last year, according to the Orlando Sentinel in Florida. Prior to this year’s fundraiser, liberal Florida attorney Daniel Uhlfelder obtained a flyer for Hawley’s event and posted it online, calling Hawley a “traitor” and asking why the hotel was supporting the Missouri Republican.
Democratic lawmakers and anti-Trump groups have since pressured the hotel chain. Critics include Florida state Rep. Anna Eskamani and the Lincoln Project, an anti-Trump group, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
Wuerffelder was in the media spotlight last May when he dressed as the Grim Reaper, humiliated tourists on a Florida beach and criticized Florida’s Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, for not closing recreational areas in the midst of a Communist virus pandemic.
On Jan. 7, U.S. publisher Simon & Schuster announced it was canceling publication of Hawley’s book “The Tyranny of Big Tech,” which had been scheduled for release in June. Hawley slammed the publisher’s decision and accused it of caving in to “the forces of evil.
In response to the Los Hotels move, Hawley’s office said in a statement that Hawley would not be deterred.
“If these companies don’t want conservatives to speak out, they should be honest about it.” Hawley said in the statement, “But equating moderating debates in the Senate with inciting violence is a lie, and a dangerous one. I will not back down from representing my constituents, nor will I bow to the pressure of left-wing corporations.”
