The 16th anniversary of Zhao Ziyang’s death, the cemetery was closely monitored

According to Radio Television Hong Kong, January 17 marks the 16th anniversary of the death of the late former General Secretary of the Communist Party Zhao Ziyang. Authorities allowed only Zhao’s family members to be present today, with tight security on the perimeter of the cemetery. His daughter Wang Yannan and son-in-law Wang Zhihua and others visited the cemetery in Beijing’s Changping district in the morning to pay their respects. But only relatives were allowed to pay their respects at the cemetery. The site was closely monitored, with security guards driving away vehicles on the grounds of an epidemic.

Reports said security guards with “security patrol” bands on their arms were stationed in the parking lot, driving away private cars, including those of the media. The security guards claimed that due to the epidemic, those without reservations were not allowed to stay in the parking lot, and even those parked nearby were also driven away.

It was reported that a group of Zhao Ziyang’s former friends and former ministers visited his former residence in Beijing yesterday, including former president of Yanhuang Chunqiu, now 97-year-old Du Guozheng, and former deputy editor-in-chief Wang Yanjun. They bowed and laid flowers to the posthumous photos of Zhao Ziyang and his wife in the study.

Former veteran Beijing journalist Gao Yu also tweeted, “Today is the 16th death anniversary of Mr. Zhao Ziyang. The cemetery has been closed to the public and only relatives are allowed to visit the cemetery today, as the former residence of Fuqiang Hutong and the cemetery of Tianshouyuan in Changping are off-limits. Ordinary people are also prohibited from taking photos on ordinary days.”
