The United States has repeatedly called for a transparent and thorough investigation into the source of COVID-19, a pneumonia disease caused by a Chinese communist virus, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement on the State Department website Friday (Jan. 15). He stressed that understanding the source of the epidemic is critical to global public health, economic recovery and international security.
In a statement Friday, Pompeo said, “To assist the important work of the World Health Organization (WHO) investigation team arriving in China this week, the U.S. government is sharing new information today (Jan. 15) on the activities inside the Chinese (Communist Party) government laboratory in 2019.”
Pompeo also said the United States would like to urge the WHO in particular to pressure the Chinese (Communist Party of China) government to address the following three issues.
- the issue of insiders at the Wuhan Institute for Virus Research (WIV) becoming ill: the U.S. government has reason to believe that several researchers within WIV became ill in the fall of 2019, before the first (CCP virus) case was confirmed. The symptoms of these researchers are consistent with COVID-19 and common seasonal illnesses. This raises questions about the credibility of WIV senior researcher Zhengli Shi’s speech. Shi has publicly declared that WIV staff and students have “zero infection” with SARS-CoV-2 or SARS-related viruses. 2.
WIV research on “RaTG13” and “gain of function”: Since at least 2016, WIV researchers have been studying the RaTG13 virus, which is a virus that WIV will be studying in January 2020. is the bat coronavirus identified by WIV in January 2020 and is the closest sample (96.2% similarity) to SARS-CoV-2 (CCA virus). Since the outbreak, the WIV has been neither transparent nor consistent about its work on RaTG13 or other similar viruses. These efforts have involved possible “gene function acquisition” experiments to increase transmissibility or lethality.
WIV’s Secret Links to Military Research: Although WIV presents itself as a civilian institution, WIV has collaborated with the Chinese Communist military on both publications and secret projects. Since at least 2017, WIV has engaged in classified research on behalf of the Chinese (Communist) military, including laboratory animal experiments.
Pompeo said the COVID-19 pandemic could have been avoided. Any responsible country would have invited global health investigators to Wuhan within days of the outbreak. But China (the Chinese Communist Party) refused the help offered by the United States and other countries, and punished the brave Chinese doctors, scientists and journalists who tried to alert the world to the dangers of the virus. Today, Beijing continues to prevent scientists from accessing some important information. Scientists need to use this information to protect the world from this deadly virus and to prevent the next wave of it.
“The United States reiterates the importance of (investigators’) unimpeded access to virus samples, laboratory records and personnel, witnesses, and whistleblowers to ensure the credibility of the WHO’s final report. Unless the Chinese Communist Party allows a full and thorough accounting of what happened in Wuhan, it is only a matter of time before another pandemic is born in China and afflicts the Chinese people and the world.”
