D.C. may close National Mall on Jan. 20, allowing only journalists and police to enter

New York National Guardsmen who have been transferred to Washington, D.C., are stationed outside the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 14, 2021.
The National Mall in Washington, D.C., will be closed on Jan. 20, Presidential Inauguration Day, allowing only media and security personnel to enter, the Washington Post said Thursday (Jan. 14), citing two people familiar with the matter who asked not to be named.

This is the latest in a series of security measures, the newspaper said. But the National Mall has been the traditional place to watch the inauguration for the past dozens of presidential inauguration days, with many people gathering there.

“That means no one can get on the National Mall.” One official said, “If you were to watch, you wouldn’t be able to see anything, you might only be able to see the top of the Capitol.”
However, a National Park Service spokesman said the same day that no “final decision” had been made on closing the National Mall.

Another video posted by Fox News reporter Jennifer Griffin shows thousands of U.S. National Guard soldiers, armed with M4 rifles, arriving on Capitol Hill Thursday.
“Never have we seen anything like this in our nation’s Capitol.” Griffin exclaimed.
Many netizens left sarcastic comments saying, “Big prison” “dominion + armed enthronement” “How does it look like a usurpation enthronement ceremony ah!” “This formation, I thought it was Maduro was elected president.”
There are also netizens who said, “Is this to defend the constitution, or to defend the dictator?” “Who is this to protect, or who is this to arrest. Such a big move.” “The president elected by the people is afraid of the people?” “It is they who are afraid, knowing that it was obtained by fraud.”
The move comes a day after the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit System has said it will close 13 Metro stations near downtown Washington and will also change bus routes in the area. Airbnb, a website that provides travel and lodging information, also announced that it would cancel and close reservations in the Washington area in the days leading up to the inauguration.
