White House national security adviser Robert O’Brien said Trump instructed government agencies to minimize purchases of Chinese goods and services to reduce the risk of espionage operations.
In a statement, Robert O’Brien accused the Chinese Communist Party of targeting U.S. government information systems and trying to steal personnel records, military plans and other information from the systems through the Internet and other means, Reuters reported.
For this reason, the United States must act to protect U.S. interests,” O’Brien said. We must adjust regulations, policies and other measures necessary to reduce the risk of Chinese technology and personnel espionage against the federal government,” he said.
He said Trump has directed government agencies to conduct a review to “minimize the federal government’s procurement of goods and services from the People’s Republic of China.
O’Brien did not provide examples of reduced purchases, but another senior administration official said the main goal is to stop the Chinese Communist Party from trying to infiltrate U.S. information technology (IT) networks.
If we have components installed by Chinese companies or other related things in our network, it could be a vulnerability and be used to implement the CCP’s civil-military integration strategy,” the official said.
For example, if there is hardware that can get into our network, that could be a potential vulnerability,” the official said.
