On Thursday, Jan. 14, President Trump (R-Texas) issued a statement saying, “I will always be committed to ending endless war.” “Under the Trump administration, the number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan is now at its lowest level in 19 years,” and “likewise, the presence of troops in Iraq and Syria is at its lowest point in years.”
President Trump emphasized that one of the key initiatives executed by the Trump administration was the beginning of the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan after nearly 20 years in the country. He was proud of his military policy over the past four years. He said it has been “a great honor to invest $2.5 trillion to rebuild America’s military, to support brave men and women in uniform, and to have beautiful new equipment made in America.”
Trump, who has long opposed the 2003 invasion of Iraq, said during his 2016 presidential campaign that he would stop the “endless wars” the U.S. has waged and bring American men and women in uniform overseas back to their homeland.
Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller announced Dec. 17 that the number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan and Iraq will each be reduced to about 2,500 by mid-January 2021. He also praised the withdrawal of U.S. troops as a result of the president’s “bold leadership.
According to U.S. media reports, the U.S. military currently has about 4,500 troops in Afghanistan and 3,000 in Iraq.
President Trump criticized the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) passed by Congress last month (December), noting that the bill goes against his foreign policy stance and undermines his efforts to withdraw troops from Afghanistan, South Korea and Germany.
