Sentenced to four years, citizen journalist Zhang Zhan will not appeal

The lawyer representing Zhang Zhan, a Chinese citizen journalist who was sentenced to four years in prison by authorities for his coverage of the Wuhan epidemic, said Wednesday that Zhang Zhan has decided not to appeal.

Radio Television Hong Kong reported that the lawyer met with Zhang Zhan that afternoon and said that he decided not to appeal on his own initiative. He also noted that the detention center pointed out the lengthy second trial process and the possibility of additional sentences on appeal, and he believes Zhang may have been influenced by that information as well. The report did not identify the lawyer.

The lawyer said Zhang Zhan is in good mental condition, but still eats only fruit, snacks and milk powder punch, not green vegetables, meat or rice. The detention center claimed that if Zhang Zhan continued to do so, they would use a thicker stomach tube to instill food.

The attorney also said Zhang Zhan did not appeal to detention officers after meeting with his attorney last week. She also did not indicate that she wanted to appeal on the last day of the appeal period this Monday.
