U.S. Senate majority leader refuses to resume early consideration of Trump impeachment

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Republican Mitch McConnell rebuffed the Democrats’ request. He refused to end the Senate recess early to consider the Trump impeachment bill passed by the House. The move would have allowed Trump to complete his presidency. Trump issued a video appealing to supporters to remain quiet in a blockade on social media platforms.

The U.S. federal House of Representatives voted unanimously yesterday, Jan. 13, to impeach Trump, making him the first president in U.S. history to have impeachment proceedings initiated twice by the House of Representatives. The vote was 197 no and 232 yes, with 10 Republicans among the yes votes.

The impeachment will then be sent to the Senate for consideration and passage before it counts. But the Senate will adjourn until the last day of Trump’s presidency, Jan. 19.

Democrats have urged the Senate to end the recess early, hoping that the Senate will urgently resume consideration of the Trump impeachment before the end of Trump’s term. But U.S. Senate Majority Leader, Republican Mitch McConnell, dismissed that request from Democrats on Wednesday, according to a Jan. 13 report by pro-Democratic media outlet CNN. He refused to end the Senate recess early for the impeachment of President Donald Trump, CNN said, adding that McConnell’s decision would likely allow President Trump to finish his final days as president.

Trump sends video appeal to supporters for calm

As he left the White House on Wednesday for the border wall in Ramos, Texas, Trump criticized the impeachment process against him by Democrats as “ridiculous” and warned that the move would “generate a lot of hate” across the country. Trump sent out a video of his Oval Office speech yesterday amid a social media blackout, in which he made no mention of his second impeachment by the House of Representatives, but called on his supporters to remain quiet, according to a news release today, Jan. 14, from the coordination department of the French language group. He said that those who created the riot could not be his supporters.

In addition, in order to ensure that Biden’s inauguration can be carried out safely, the U.S. capital Washington is in a state of high alert, the Pentagon sent tens of thousands of National Guard troops were deployed everywhere.
