Park Geun-hye sentenced to 20 years and fined 18 billion won for bribery

The South Korean Grand Court (Supreme Court) today (1/14) handed down its final verdict on former President Park Geun-hye’s “bosom friend-gate” interference case and bribery case, ruling that the original sentence was upheld, sentencing Park to 20 years in prison and a fine of 18 billion won (about NT$460 million), and recovering 3.5 billion won (about NT$100 million) in criminal proceeds.

Park was involved in a total of three cases, including the case of interference by her bosom friend Choi Soon-sil, the case of receiving bribes from the National Intelligence Service, and the case of illegal interference in the party election of the New World Party (predecessor of the National Power Party) in the 2016 National Assembly election. The third of these cases was previously sentenced to two years in prison, so Park may have to serve a total of 22 years.

Park is the fourth outgoing president in South Korea’s history to be convicted of corruption, while her predecessor Lee Myung-bak was the third, serving a 17-year sentence for bribery, embezzlement and abuse of power.

The company’s main goal is to provide a solution to the problem of the problem. The Associated Press reported that the next presidential election in South Korea will be held in March next year, Moon Jae-in is likely to pardon the two former presidents with different parties in the last year of his term to resolve serious social differences.
