U.S. media reported today that President-elect Joe Biden is expected to nominate Gary Gensler, the chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission under the Obama administration, to run the Securities and Exchange Commission. Gensler was known for his hard-line stance when he was in charge of regulating derivatives trading.

Gensler was tapped by Biden to chair the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and he could scale back a series of actions taken by the outgoing Trump administration to loosen regulations imposed after the 2008 global financial crisis.

Reformers who support stricter controls on financial markets are likely to cheer the choice of Janssler, given his reputation for confronting the forces of Wall Street.

During former President Barack Obama’s presidency, Jansler served as chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) from 2009 to 2014, where he led the effort to reform the mass exchange market, a financial instrument that featured prominently in the 2008-2010 financial crisis.

A longtime member of the government, Jansler was a top official at the Treasury Department during the administration of former President Bill Clinton.

Prior to that, Jensler was a senior executive at Wall Street giant Goldman Sachs and is currently a professor of management and economics at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
