Authorities in Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras announced Monday that they are preparing for a procession of migrants departing from northern Honduras and heading to the United States. The procession was assembled in an online call, counting on Biden to ease immigration policies…
A large number of migrants should depart from northern Honduras on Friday, five days before Biden’s inauguration, after social networks launched a call to form a migrant “caravan. These teams, looking for the “American dream”, believe that Biden will soften the U.S. immigration policy.
A delegation of authorities from Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras visited the Corinto border post between Honduras and Guatemala on Monday, according to AFP news agency from the Honduran capital Tegucigalpa on Jan. 11. The location is about 200 kilometers north of the Honduran capital Tegucigalpa.
Guatemalan authorities said in a statement that their goal was to determine what measures should be taken to receive this migrant contingent. Priority will be given “to helping unaccompanied minors and vulnerable groups.”
The statement from Guatemalan authorities also said that if “migration is a right”, then migrants must also comply with the rules for entering Guatemalan territory, in particular the need to show proof of a negative coronavirus (Covid-19) test and identity documents, including those of minor children.
Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras also announced in a joint statement to support “safe, orderly and legal” migration and to strengthen the fight against “illegal migrant labor and human trafficking.
Since last December, invitations to form a “migrant caravan for January 15, 2021” have been circulating on social networks. Like the 12 migrant caravans organized since October 2018, this one will depart from San Pedro Sula, Honduras’ second largest city, which is the country’s industrial center and economic engine.
Mexicans, Salvadorans and Guatemalans preparing to emigrate have responded to the call, saying they will join the Honduran contingent halfway.
Earlier, the Central American migrant army was met with increased border control measures ordered by U.S. President Donald Trump. He has even deployed military personnel at the border.
Trump traveled to the Alamo border wall in Texas yesterday, Tuesday. There, he gave a short speech calling for an era of “peace and calm. Trump said an English proverb: “Be careful what you wish for. Some online comments suggested it was directed at Biden.
