Secretary of State Michael Pompeo spoke to former administration officials during a meeting with top Republican lawmakers and senior congressional staffers last Friday evening, Breitbart News has learned exclusively. He spoke of the Chinese Communist threat, saying that not only does he have a bipartisan base in dealing with it, but that the Trump administration has built a huge coalition in the world.
In his remarks, Pompeo said, “I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished. It’s not just in the areas of national security, foreign policy, and areas that I’ve been involved in, but the contributions that we’ve made in preserving and supporting the American family, and the anti-abortion efforts that we’ve made that are historic. I think that when these accomplishments are written into history, we will be well remembered by future generations.”
Pompeo’s remarks came at the end of a day-long private meeting with the Republican Study Committee, the largest conservative caucus in the House. Chaired by caucus member Rep. Jim Banks (R-Okla.), Pompeo discussed with lawmakers and his aides the current state of Republican conservatism and where to go next.
He said of dealing with the threat from the Chinese Communist Party, “Not only are we doing the right thing, but frankly, I think there’s some bipartisan ground on this, and I hope we can continue to do the right thing.”
Pompeo also noted that while the Trump administration has been criticized for undermining alliances around the world, it has succeeded in building a “tremendous coalition” with the Indians, Australians, Japanese, Koreans and some European countries to fight the Chinese Communist Party. He said 120 international telecommunications companies have abandoned any Chinese technology in their systems.
In the Middle East, Pompeo said the Trump administration has been working to address the challenges there.
He said that while it would have been “gratifying” to resolve the issue between Israel and the Palestinians, it was impossible to do so, and that Israel should first establish diplomatic relations with other neighboring countries and be recognized, rather than being hostile to them.
He added that these neighboring countries also recognize the land occupied by Israel as a fait accompli, such as the recognition of Israeli settlements in the Golan Heights and the recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. The Trump administration has done so, he said, and it has done so in the face of great risk.
In the Western Hemisphere, he said, “We’ve done a great job, too.”
“I’ve spent more time on Western Hemisphere issues than any secretary of state in 60 years. So whether it’s our cooperation with our friends in Brazil, our efforts to oust (Venezuela’s) Maduro – although those efforts haven’t been successful – and our chosen policy toward the Cuban regime, every effort is making the United States more secure.” He said.
He also highlighted the friendly relations the U.S. has built with Mexico. “We finally convinced the Mexicans that they now recognize that securing the Mexican border to stop illegal immigration to the United States makes sense and is good for them.”
Pompeo also tweeted a photo of himself, National Intelligence Director John Ratcliffe and White House National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien.
“It was an honor to work with John Ratcliffe and Robert O’Brien. They are both great patriots who work every day to make America and the world a safer and more prosperous place.” He tweeted.
Pompeo also discussed the Trump administration’s foreign policy successes. He added, “It means we are acutely aware that our only responsibility is to protect the American people and their interests. And when we do that, I’m very confident that we will also increase the security of people around the world, and we will also raise their standard of living. But our task every day is, ‘How do we make sure that everything we do safeguards the freedom of the American people?’ That takes us out of the clutter. We’ve stepped away from the World health Organization, we’ve stepped away from the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, and we don’t subscribe to some of the core ideas of the World Trade Organization.” He said.
