The epidemic continues to spiral out of control in the U.S. According to Johns Hopkins University statistics, as of 8:30 p.m. EST on the 12th, more than 235,000 people have been diagnosed with the Chinese Communist virus (COVID-19) and 4,470 people have died. This is also the first time in 24 hours the number of sickness died more than 4,000 people, a new record high.
According to the Covid Tracking Project, about 131,000 people are currently hospitalized in the U.S., and the average number of deaths per week is the highest since the outbreak began.
The latest wave of outbreaks in the U.S. is mixed with a rapidly spreading variant of the virus, which was first detected in the U.K. last December and is highly contagious, and has now spread to at least seven U.S. states, including New York, Colorado and California.
Anthony S. Fauci, a U.S. epidemic prevention expert, said that because of the high number of people traveling and gathering during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, “we have reason to believe that the outbreak will worsen after mid-January.
The U.S. launched a mass vaccination program in mid-December last year, but the program is lagging behind, with only 9.3 million people, or less than 10 percent of the population, having received the first of two doses of the vaccine.
To date, 22.8 million people have been diagnosed in the United States and more than 380,000 have died.
