Telegram U.S. downloads soar, sought after by Trump supporters

The British newspaper The Daily Telegraph reported that Telegram became the second most downloaded application in the United States, influenced by the influx of supporters of incumbent U.S. President Donald Trump.

According to the report, Telegram’s downloads increased significantly after Twitter and Facebook deleted Trump’s personal accounts on Jan. 10 and Parler, a social App popular with Trump’s supporters, was denied service.

Citing data from Sensor Tower, the newspaper reported that from Wednesday to Sunday, the Telegram app was downloaded about 545,000 times in the U.S., almost three times as many as in the same period last week. The Daily Telegraph added that social network Parler also posted a message calling for a move to the Telegram app before it was shut down.

The increase in Telegram downloads is also reportedly due to WhatsApp’s new privacy policy.

Telegram founder Pavel Durov did not respond to The Daily Caller’s request for comment.

The social networking app Parler is used by supporters of President Trump as a messaging tool. Google has taken it off its app store, citing “calls for violence on the platform. Apple said posts on Parler related to the U.S. Capitol riots contained calls for violence and violated company rules. Amazon later announced it was discontinuing its partnership with Parler. Amazon’s Amazon Web Services cloud services company truncated Parler’s hosting links.
