Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said Malaysia’s declaration of a state of emergency is not a military coup to help the current government stay in power.
He said Tuesday that under the state of emergency, the government could mobilize resources to more effectively contain the communist virus outbreak and increase penalties for violations to combat the epidemic.
Nonetheless, he said meetings of the national and state parliaments would be suspended in the meantime, and no elections would be held until the independent commission deemed the situation safe. The independent commission is composed of health experts and members of parliament from the ruling coalition and the opposition.
Muhyiddin also said there would be no curfew during this period, and he promised not to interfere with justice.
“Our judicial system remains a beacon of justice in this country,” he said. He added that the federal and state administrations will also not be interfered with.
He said business remains open in Malaysia during the state of emergency and that the government is committed to maintaining good governance.
