2020 China Passenger Car Sales Down 6.8% Mobile Phone Shipments Down 21%

China’s passenger car sales decline by 6.8% in 2020, the third consecutive year of contraction in the Chinese auto market; in addition, Chinese cell phone shipments decrease by nearly 21% for the full year 2020.

Passenger car sales in China decline by 6.8%

In 2020, Chinese passenger car retail sales reach a cumulative total of 19.288 million units, down 6.8% year-over-year, marking the third consecutive year of contraction in the Chinese auto market.

On Monday (Jan. 11), the China Passenger Vehicle Market Information Joint Committee said that cumulative passenger vehicle sales in China will reach 19.29 million units in 2020, down about one-fifth from the market high back in 2017.

IHS Markit automotive analyst Lin Huaibin said the Chinese passenger car market fell 41 percent in the first quarter of 2020, with much worse sales expectations for the full year, impacted by the Communist Party’s viral outbreak, when embargo restrictions were imposed in many parts of the country.

Cell phone shipments fall nearly 21% y/y

On Monday, data released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology showed that China’s cell phone shipments fell 12.6 percent year-on-year to 26.6 million units in December; for the full year 2020, shipments fell 20.8 percent to 307.9 million units.

China ICT said a total of 462 new models of cell phones were launched in 2020, down 19.4% year-on-year.

In terms of 5G handsets, 18.2 million units were shipped on the mainland in December, accounting for 68.4% of total shipments; 19 new model 5G handsets were launched during the month, equivalent to 42.2% of all new model handsets launched during the month.

Since 2021, 5G handset shipments total 162.8 million units, accounting for 52.9% of total shipments, with 218 new models of 5G handsets launched during the period.

For smartphones alone, shipments were 25.2 million units in December and 295.7 million units in 2020, down 12.8% and 20.4% y-o-y, respectively.
