Taiwan‘s independence and local associations held a press conference on December 12 to call on U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Krafft to assist Taiwan’s return to the UN.
As the Trump administration is about to leave office, the relationship between the United States and Taiwan has taken a new step forward. U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Craft will arrive in Taiwan on Wednesday for a record-breaking visit that will include not only a public speech but also a joint press conference with Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Wu Chiu-sup. Taiwan’s local community has called on her to assist Taiwan’s return to the UN. However, the KMT side has a different voice.
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Kelly Craft visited Taiwan from the 13th to the 15th, and the Foreign Ministry said Craft will meet with President Tsai Ing-wen on the 14th. Compared to last year’s low-key visit by U.S. health Secretary Alex Azar and Under Secretary Keith Krach, who did not speak to the public, this time the first U.S. ambassador to the United Nations will not only have a public lecture at the Foreign Service Institute, but will also hold a joint press conference with Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Wu Chiu-sup, a record that has never been seen in the past and has attracted much attention.

About ten representatives of Taiwan’s independent and local associations, as well as the opposition Time Force political party, held separate press conferences on the 12th to express their welcome and appreciation for Craft’s visit.
Former Deputy Representative of Taiwan to the United States and Honorary Chairman of the Taiwan United Nations Association, Tsai Ming-hsien, said that several polls in Taiwan showed that more than 80% of the Taiwanese people support Taiwan’s membership in the United Nations. The visit of Craft to Taiwan is a breakthrough, showing the result of the efforts of the people of Taiwan over the years. He also hoped that Craft would speak on behalf of Taiwan at the international level.
Tsai Ming-hsien called on “President Tsai Ing-wen to make use of the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Craft, to come to Taiwan this time, and Foreign Minister Wu should also express to her the will of the Taiwanese people that Taiwan join the United Nations as well as the international organization WHO, etc.”

Cai Ming-hsien called on the Legislative Yuan to issue a cross-party resolution this week, similar to the “Joint Resolution in Support of Taiwan’s Participation in the WHO” co-sponsored by the political parties of the opposition last February, thanking Pompeo for announcing the lifting of restrictions on U.S.-Taiwan relations, and hoping that the government of the Republic of China will echo the call made by more than 70 U.S. Representatives in a joint letter to Pompeo to rename the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States as the “Taiwan Representative Office.
Time Force expressed four major expectations for the public welcome letter from the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. President Chen Jiaohua said, “I hope that Taiwan-U.S. relations will warm up and that the U.S. will specifically support Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Organization General Assembly this May and the United Nations General Assembly this September. I hope Ambassador Craft will support an official visit to Washington by Taiwan’s Foreign Minister. Taiwan also supports a visit by the U.S. Secretary of State to Taiwan and a regular exchange of visits by Taiwan and U.S. cabinet members on economic, trade, health and defense matters. In the future, it is also hoped that President Tsai Ing-wen will visit Washington before the end of her term.”

Tu Sheng-chieh, chairman of the Taiwan United Nations Association, said that the civil society’s demand for Taiwan’s membership in the United Nations for more than a decade saw a ray of light and hoped that Taiwan could join the UN as soon as possible.
Opposition to UN Ambassador’s visit to Taiwan? The independent camp condemns the blue camp for violating Chiang Ching-kuo’s “three no’s” policy towards the Chinese Communist Party
The former President Ma Ying-jeou said in an interview that the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations was sent to Taiwan only to stimulate the Chinese Communist Party, and that it was impossible for Taiwan to enter the United Nations. Fei Hongtai, a KMT member of the legislature, added: “It’s not hospitality, it’s evil, it shouldn’t come”.
Tu Shengzhe at the press conference then criticized these statements of the KMT people: “I believe that all Taiwanese are very happy to have such progress, we regret that the KMT, especially Ma Ying-jeou, Fei Hongtai and others, even oppose, even spit, even call people evil guests, which is really very, very bad, not only against Chiang Ching-kuo’s previous (to the Chinese Communist Party) ‘no contact, no negotiation, no compromise’ instructions, and ignoring the changing international situation, and only bent on pleasing China, this we want to express our greatest condemnation.”

The general director of the Referendum for Taiwan Alliance, Cai Dinggui, believes that once Craft’s itinerary is made public, the unificationists and those who oppose it will definitely go to protest, and he wants to mobilize supporters to take the U.S. flag and the Taiwan flag to express their welcome, so that the people of the unificationists who want to make a scene will stand next to each other and go to the toilet.
The company’s main goal is to provide a platform for the public to learn more about the company’s business. Cai Dinggui said Pompeo should have been referring to “free Taiwan,” a model for the dictatorial Chinese Communist Party to become a free China.
Chen Nantian, chairman of the Taiwan Independence Alliance, said that people should help themselves first. The “Republic of China” has been kicked out of the United Nations for so long, but it continues to use the Republic of China’s national name, how can it enter the United Nations? The so-called “China” is the “People’s Republic of China”, not the “Republic of China”, Taiwan itself must first position itself well, is Taiwan, not the Republic of China.
After Pompeo announced the lifting of official U.S.-Taiwanese exchange restrictions, KMT members of the legislature called for the restoration of Taiwan’s U.S. offices to raise the flag of the Republic of China at Twin Oaks. In addition, there are various demands from opposition parties and local faction associations.

Tsai’s government cautiously responds to the lifting of the ban on U.S.-Taiwan relations, criticizing that the Chinese Communist Party has no right to make a statement
