Brazilian media: Kexin vaccine “overall effectiveness” of less than 60%

Reuters reported on Tuesday (12), citing the Brazilian news website UOL on Monday (11), that the “overall effectiveness” of the Coxin vaccine was less than 60 percent. Brazilian officials said on Monday that researchers would release more data on the effectiveness of the vaccine on Tuesday.

Brazil released data from late-stage clinical tests of the Chinese Kexing vaccine in Brazil last Thursday (7), with an effectiveness rate of 78 percent, but the data was criticized by experts and regulators as being incomplete and calls for greater transparency.

Dimas Covas, director of the Butantan Institute in Brazil’s São Paulo state, said in an interview with UOL on Monday that in addition to the “clinical utility rate,” ongoing analysis has also produced a new “overall utility rate. The full data will be presented at a scientific conference this week,” he said. The institute is involved in the Phase III clinical study of the Coxsemicon lung vaccine. The Butantan Institute said the UOL report on the effectiveness rate of the Coxin vaccine was pure speculation.

Separately, Indonesia’s Drug and Food Surveillance Agency announced Monday that it has granted an emergency use permit for the Coxin vaccine. The vaccine has completed a phase III clinical trial in Bandung city, with efficacy above the 50 percent threshold set by the World health Organization, said Lukiito, director of Indonesia’s Drug and Food Surveillance Administration.

Indonesian President Widodo announced last week that the country will vaccinate its nationals with the new crown pneumonia vaccine starting this week.
