President Donald Trump Approves Emergency Declaration for the District of Columbia
Enactment Date January 11, 2021
Today, President Donald Trump declared that an emergency exists in the District of Columbia due to the emergency created by the 59th Presidential Inauguration and ordered federal assistance to supplement the District’s response efforts for the period January 11 through January 24, 2021.
The President’s action authorizes the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to coordinate all disaster response efforts that are designed to alleviate the hardship and suffering caused to local residents by the emergency and to provide appropriate assistance for emergency measures needed to save lives, protect property and public health and safety, and mitigate or avert the threat of disaster in the District of Columbia, as authorized by Title V of the Stafford Act.
Specifically, FEMA is authorized to identify, mobilize, and provide, as appropriate, the equipment and resources necessary to mitigate the effects of an emergency. Emergency protective measures, limited to direct federal assistance, will be 100 percent federally funded.
Pete Gaynor, Director of the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), appointed Thomas J. Fargione as the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected area.
