Republican U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-UT) speaks to reporters in Washington, April 21, 2020.
Republican U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Va.) said Sunday night (10) that President Trump (Trump) does not plan to resign and that he remains the most infectious and influential Republican.
I talked to President Trump today,” Gaetz said on Fox Report Weekend. He’s not going to resign, and he’s not going to leave the public stage at all. Donald J. Trump remains a loyal patriotic movement and an inspiring leader.”
Gates added that Trump still leads those who “believe America’s best days are still ahead, those who support law enforcement, and those who need to unite against the radical left-wing agenda that Biden seems intent on introducing.”
“President Trump remains the most infectious and influential Republican on the planet. I expect that even though he will leave the White House when his term legally ends in a few days, he will continue to speak out on the things that matter to the tens of millions of Americans who voted for him.” Gates continued.
Democrats and several Republicans have previously called for Trump to resign. Some are pressing Vice President Mike Pence and the Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump, but sources close to Pence told the Epoch Times that Pence does not support the proposal.
House Democrats are planning to impeach Trump. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told colleagues Sunday night that Democrats will continue to push to bring impeachment to a vote.
Gates said impeachment is unnecessary and divisive, noting that Trump has just nine days left in office.
Trump has supporters in Congress, but is coming under increasing criticism from Republicans. Republican Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) said Sunday that the president “has committed an impeachable offense. Other Republican lawmakers have also criticized him for his words and actions last week.
But Republican Rep. James Comer (R-Texas) said Monday (11) that Trump’s policies “are the future of the Republican Party.
“I think we need to become a party that represents blue collar to a greater extent, a party that represents workers to a greater extent. We need to still believe in our conservative values, especially our conservative social values. But we need to become a party of unity, we need to become a party of inclusion, we need to attract more minorities to the Republican Party. If we’re going to thrive, we need to be a party that pursues a big tent policy ((meaning a policy that is inclusive of a wide range of political and social views).” But, he said, “be consistent in our conservative philosophy and focus on trying to help working-class Americans, forgotten Americans. Trump’s base is the future of the Republican Party.”
