The search continues for a Boeing 737-500 from Indonesia’s Sriwijaya Air that crashed in the Java Sea on Jan. 9. Authorities initially speculated that there was a chance that the airliner disintegrated when it hit the water, rather than exploding in the air.
Indonesia’s National Transportation Safety Board investigator Nurcahyo Utomo 11 said to Reuters, “We are still not sure, but when looking at the debris of the plane, found that are scattered in a not too wide area.”
He pointed out that the airliner fell into the sea may have broken the fuselage, because if the plane exploded in the air, the debris will be more widely distributed.
Authorities in nearly a day of search, found the location of the two black boxes; “black box” is the common name for the flight data recorder. The commander-in-chief of the Indonesian National Army, Hadi Tjahjanto, said he hoped they would be recovered soon. But he did not say when it is expected to do so.
