University of Chicago officials have identified the first victim of Saturday’s (Jan. 9) serial shooting as 30-year-old Ph.D. student in financial economics Fan Yiran (ph), according to the Associated Press.
According to police, the 32-year-old killer, Jason Nightengale, shot and killed Fan Yiran, who was sitting in his car, in a parking lot in the Hyde Park neighborhood. That shooting was the start of a wild series of shootings that killed three people and wounded four others over the course of about four hours. Eventually, Nandengar was killed in a shootout with Evanston police.
Investigators are trying to determine a motive for the serial shootings.
In an e-mail to alumni, University of Chicago President Robert Zimmer and Provost Li Jiayi said Fan had come to the United States from China to study and was in his fourth year of doctoral studies and planned to present his dissertation later this year.
The e-mail reads, “This sudden and meaningless loss of life has brought us indescribable sorrow. In the days ahead, we will stand together as a community to mourn and to inspire other members of our community during this difficult and very sad time.”
Despite no indication of an “ongoing threat,” the university plans to increase its police presence around the area where the killing took place.
