Biden Announces National Security Council Members

On Friday (Jan. 8), President-elect Joe Biden announced the appointment of 21 members to the new National Security Council (NSC) team, calling its members “diverse and experienced.

Many of the appointees have worked in the Obama administration, some in the White House and others on Obama’s National Security Council.

“The National Security Council plays a critical role in keeping our nation safe,” Biden said in a statement. Biden said in a statement. He also said the crisis-tested and experienced NSC members he has selected will work tirelessly to protect the American people and restore U.S. leadership in the world.

According to the White House, the NSC is “the President’s primary platform for deliberations on national security and foreign policy matters with his senior national security advisers and Cabinet officials.

Since its creation by President Harry Truman, its role has been to advise the president on national security and foreign policy and to coordinate between numerous government agencies.

Among the members of the National Security Council announced by Biden on Friday was Melanie Nakagawa, who was named senior director for climate and energy. Nakagawa served as a strategic adviser on climate change to then-Secretary of State John Kerry in the Obama administration.

Ariana Berengaut has been named senior adviser to the national security adviser. She served as a speechwriter and adviser to then-Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken in the Obama administration.

If approved, Jon Finer would become chief deputy national security adviser. He served in the White House and State Department under Obama, and also served as a Middle East adviser and foreign policy speechwriter to then-Vice President Joe Biden.

Caitlin Durkovich has been named senior director for response and preparedness. Durkovich previously served as assistant secretary for infrastructure protection and chief of staff for the Department of Homeland Security’s National Protection and Programs Directorate during the Obama administration.

In addition, Biden announced other appointments to the National Security Council on Friday.
