House Republican Leader McCarthy: Oppose impeachment of Trump

Democrats are actively plotting to impeach President Trump following the events at the Capitol on Wednesday (6). House Republicans warned Democrats against impeaching Trump, accusing them of being divisive.

“I’m against impeachment. I think it’s more important at this point to focus on healing and achieving a peaceful transition of power, as the president himself has indicated he will do. Impeachment will only anger those who believe this election was stolen, and it’s time to move forward,” Rep. Tom Reed, a New York Republican, told The Hill.

Another Republican lawmaker also said they believe impeachment could further stir up negative feelings and said they need to prove to voters that they are taking voter concerns about election security seriously, eliminate deception and build voter confidence in democracy.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) issued a statement Friday calling for unity and a smooth transition of power.

“Impeaching the president with only 12 days left in his term will only further divide our country,” McCarthy said, adding that he had reached out to Biden that day and planned to speak to him about how we must work together to unite the country and address the challenges facing America.

McCarthy stressed that together we can achieve peace, strength and prosperity, and that if we are divided, “we will fail.”

And House Democrats said they are prepared to move forward with impeachment as early as next week if Vice President Mike Pence does not invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi threatened Friday that if Trump does not “resign immediately,” the House could move to impeach him for his role in the “Capitol sedition.

U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), while not opposing congressional certification of Biden, warned that impeachment would be “damaging” and would not succeed.

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro told Fox Business on Friday that what happened on Capitol Hill is tragic, but it should not be blamed on President Trump.

Navarro added that as documented in two reports he has written since the election detailing election fraud, all President Trump has done since Nov. 3 is to get to the bottom of election fraud.
