The mass arrests of more than 50 pro-democracy activists by the Hong Kong Police Force (HKPF) have been met with a wave of international criticism. In response, the founding chairman of the Hong Kong United Democrats, Mr. Law Kwun Chung, wrote a letter in the Washington Post, saying that verbal condemnation is not enough and calling on the international community to do more for democracy in Hong Kong before the situation becomes irreversible.
In his article “The world must do more to counter China’s crackdown on Hong Kong,” published in the Washington Post on 8 August, Luo Guancong pointed out that the mass arrests of pro-democracy activists show that the Chinese Communist Party is acting in a rogue-like manner, and that the authorities will not stop until the voices of opposition in Hong Kong disappear.
Luo Guancong further said that even if many countries express concern and condemnation of the CCP’s evil deeds, this is far from enough, saying that the international community’s “inaction” is actually one of the reasons why the CCP has not hidden its commitment to Hong Kong.
Luo Guancong cited the example of the European Union and German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, who condemned the incident and asked the Chinese side to respect Hong Kong people and implement the rule of law, but soon after the EU signed an investment agreement with China.
He called for a global resolve to put human rights above commercial interests and hoped that the European Parliament would strongly oppose this shallow investment agreement between China and the EU, and that the incoming Biden administration would continue to consolidate transatlantic cooperation, enhance democratic links, and put pressure on authoritarian regimes to counter the expansion of the Chinese Communist Party in the free world.
As a Hong Kong resident in exile, he cannot actually lend a helping hand, but the only support he can provide is to continue to promote their common ideals internationally.
