I got home from Washington DC last night (Jan 6) at 12pm and was just about to fall asleep around 1:30am this morning when a text message rang on my phone. I was wondering who was texting me so late at night. I was just about to delete it because I don’t understand English when I suddenly saw the three big bold letters of CNN in front of the article and was curious to see what the media was saying at this critical time. For other aspects I am not personally experienced, have no right to speak, but to the inside of a sentence, but I have to say.
“He (Trump) addressed thousands of supporters outside the White House, vowing never to concede defeat and urging people to march to the Capitol.” Just this one sentence, I’m going to say something about it. Yesterday my friends and I were heading to the National Mall along the White House and Washington Monument at 7 a.m. We saw supporters heading in all directions on the way, and felt that there were enough people to make the atmosphere strong. We arrived at the rally site has been entering the west side of the avenue (because of the direction of the fall, said the direction of the west may not be accurate) pulling banners, holding signs. By the time Trump spoke at 12:00 noon, my wife and I wanted to see something more visual, so we walked towards the direction of the monument (east of the road), but as soon as we took a few steps up the curbstone and into the park, we couldn’t walk because there were too many people. Luckily, the people at the rally were kind enough to walk ahead of us, shouting “Sorry, excuse me”, with my wife holding on to my backpack. Luckily, the rallyists were kind enough to turn their upper bodies sideways or move their feet a bit to let us pass, and then they naturally returned to their original positions in the crowd. I was able to see the big screen sideways after 10 minutes or so, and we didn’t want to bother pushing our way in, and we were too embarrassed to bother the kind people again, so we just watched it here. The picture I posted in our Signal group was a good shot from that place, because many flags in front were fluttering in the wind, and some tall Americans would be crowded and swayed, blocking the view at any time. Even in this picture, I twisted my upper body to find a gap to take the picture, which was not easy.
In the westward direction of the monument, there are about four or five big screens in turn. In fact, people in the back of a big screen position, look at the far side of the other big screen picture, not necessarily can see clearly, because far enough, only a blur to see, but the sound can be spread in all directions, two big screen between the sound transmission, the distance will be shortened twice, so listen or very clear. How far is the length of this vertical can be imagined. Horizontal, about 1/3 of the vertical distance, right. In such a large area crowded with so many people, not just “thousands” to calculate. I can’t say how many people there were, but I believe the authorities will have a more accurate statement.
There was only one rally at the state capitol that I didn’t go to some time ago. Each time I paid attention to the number of participants. The least I estimated after visual inspection was more than 100 people, and when I went to do a serious count, it was more than 200 people. It’s amazing how much difference there is between what the human eye can visually see and what actually happens. And that was just a palm-sized area where people stood very loose. And the area yesterday was not just a hundred or a thousand times the size of the state government, so I estimate the number of people was well over one or two million, or more. That scene could not be seen at a glance, but looking into the distance, you could faintly and shadowingly see flags of different colors, sizes and heights waving, that would prove that there were people underneath the flags, and the report said thousands of people, which is a bit too outrageous, right?
This CNN report is a serious misrepresentation. The thousands of people I understand in Chinese are under 9,999. After 10,000 people, it should not be thousands, but tens of thousands. After 10,000 people, it should be tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands up to millions. Maybe the translation software is wrong or my Chinese comprehension is too poor, in which case please forgive me. If not, it would be a little too funny if the reporter had been there in person.
If the report was inadvertently inaccurate, and the article was sent out with feedback, then an apology should be given to the readers, and if no apology is forthcoming, then it would not be wrong to say it was intentional, we wait.
I am a little disappointed with the media’s outburst some time ago about CNN’s morning meeting being taped. The growth of a media outlet comes with integrity. The public is the one who raises you up by paying for your integrity. If you lose the conscience of a media person, will you have a tomorrow? Woo hoo!
