China’s pork, lamb prices rise for 7th straight week

Recently, the wholesale price of pork in China rose for seven consecutive weeks, from 39.36 yuan/kg to 45.92 yuan/kg, an increase of 16.67%. In addition, the wholesale price of lamb has also increased for 7 consecutive weeks, and the rising price of beef has not subsided.

Pork prices rose for 7 consecutive weeks

According to the “National Agricultural Products Wholesale Market Price Information System” monitored by the Ministry of Agriculture and rural Affairs of the Communist Party of China, the wholesale price of pork has increased since the 47th week of 2020 to the 1st week of 2021, rising for 7 consecutive weeks from 39.36 yuan/kg to 45.92 yuan/kg, an increase of 16.67%.

Also according to the CPC Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs’ sentinel monitoring of 500 county marketplaces and collection points in mainland China, the average price of live pigs in mainland China was RMB 34.80/kg in the 5th week of December 2020, up 3.2% from the previous week and up 4.6% year-on-year. Combing the data revealed that the price of live pigs in mainland China has increased for 6 consecutive weeks.

China News reported on Jan. 8 that at a vegetable market in Beijing’s Fengtai District, a resident said, “In the fourth quarter of 2020, pork experienced a wave of price reductions, with stuffed meat and cavity bones dropping below 20 yuan, and pancetta also dropping, but recently the fore tip price went back up.”

The above-mentioned vegetable market stall price tag shows that the meat filling 17 yuan a catty, the front elbow 24.5 yuan a catty, cavity bone 19 yuan a catty, large five flowers 32.5 yuan a catty, the front tip 26.5 yuan a catty.

The stall owner said, “Before New Year’s Day, the front tip dropped to 24.5 yuan a catty, and recently rose to 26.5 yuan.”

The wholesale price of lamb rose for seven consecutive weeks beef prices climbed

Data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the Communist Party of China show that the average price of lamb in mainland China’s wholesale agricultural market was 72.26 yuan per kilogram in December 2020, up 4.6% from a year earlier and 6.0% from a year earlier.

As of Week 1, 2021, according to the National Agricultural Products Wholesale Market Price Information System, the wholesale price of lamb has risen for seven consecutive weeks, from RMB 69.22/kg in Week 47, 2020 to RMB 74.87/kg in Week 1, 2021, an increase of 8.16%.

As the price of lamb rose, the wholesale price of beef also rose continuously.

Data show that in December 2020, the average price of beef in China’s agricultural wholesale market was 76.33 yuan/kg, up 0.8% YoY and 8.6% YoY. In the 1st week of 2021, beef prices continued to rise, with an average price of 76.95 yuan/kg, up 0.2% YoY and up 9.2% YoY.

Rising wholesale prices drove up the end retail prices. Beijing Fengtai District, a beef and lamb store staff said, “the store lamb prices have now risen to 48 yuan a catty, the same price as beef tenderloin, beef hind leg meat is 42 yuan a catty.”

According to the staff, “lamb has just gone up in the last ten days or so, before it was 45-46 yuan. Beef prices have not changed much since the second half of 2020, the hind leg meat has increased by about 2 yuan, the tenderloin meat has increased by 3 yuan.”
