Recently, U.S.-based pro-democracy activist Geng Champion performed a “death-defying” act after being attacked online. The incident reflects the mentality of some overseas netizens under the control of the Chinese Communist Party’s speech.
Geng, a pro-democracy activist now living in Los Angeles, learned he had been infected with the “new crown” virus through a test on Dec. 22 last year, and tweeted about his fight against the disease day by day.
Subsequently, his Twitter feed was flooded with personal attacks and abusive content posted by Chinese accounts. Usually there were hundreds or hundreds of these tweets per day, and on some days there were thousands of them. At the same time, attacks against him began to appear on many Chinese websites and Chinese self-media. On January 4 of this year, Geng’s friend Yan Lin announced on Twitter that Geng had “passed away,” which led to an even larger attack on the aforementioned accounts, websites and self-publishers. This led to a larger attack by the above-mentioned accounts, websites and self-publishers.
In addition to abusing Geng himself, they also extended their attacks to Geng’s family and friends. By abusing Geng, these Chinese accounts, websites, and media outlets also attacked the U.S. health care system and political system.
On January 6, reporters contacted Geng himself and learned that not only had he not passed away, but he was now free of symptoms of “New Crown” pneumonia and had been released from quarantine in accordance with medical advice. He said that since he announced his condition, he has encountered a lot of cyber violence attacks. He asked a friend to announce his death on Jan. 4 as a deliberate act. He was outraged by the pro-communist attacks on Los Angeles activist Ding Jianqiang after his death from the “new crown” epidemic late last year. As a result, he devised this “scam.
He said, “I want to let anti-communist groups and people around the world, including overseas pro-democracy activists, know the fact that although there are many ‘fifty cents’ in China, they have a lot of influence. ‘ is large in number, but their intelligence is very low. “
Geng’s friend, Los Angeles immigration consultant Zheng Cunzhu, said that Geng’s “fraudulent death” was a piece of performance art, and that the action had two purposes. “Previously, it was one-sided, we have no way to enter the country, but now we can use this way to communicate with them. At the same time, will also achieve another purpose, is to expose China, Chinese have a part of the people gloating, lose the bottom line of being a person’s mentality. “
In this incident, Geng Champion’s friends and family have also experienced harassment and online violence. Yan Lin, the publisher of the false news of Geng’s “death,” told reporters that since he published the news on Jan. 4, he has encountered constant harassment. He said: “They call me, often at night, a lot of unknown calls, obviously the kind of harassment calls, because I remember never before at night. So how did my phone number get leaked out? They looked for information from the Internet, because my information is basically semi-public. “
Geng Champion’s wife, Yang Xiao, said she has been subjected to online violence and phone and text message harassment and curses lately, with harassers also targeting her children: “Cursing me and Champion even, (but also) cursing the baby. One that hurt me the most was a curse that my baby would not live past the age of seven. “
In response to the above incident, Mr. Yao, who now lives in the western U.S. and has worked in the Chinese self-publishing industry for many years, expressed his views. He said, “At present, the Chinese authorities are guiding and controlling public opinion so that there is only one voice inside the wall and brainwashing the people. Some self-publishers have no qualms about speculating on a person’s death and disregarding human nature in order to please the authorities and incidentally ‘cut the leeks’ of those who believe the official story. These self-publishers have a lot to answer for, but the main responsibility certainly lies with the Chinese authorities. “
