More than half of the surveyed Hong Kong nurses consider emigration 90% for political reasons

The Hong Kong Nurses Association conducted a questionnaire survey on Hong Kong nurses’ intention to emigrate from November 16 to November 30, 2020. 43.9% of the nurses surveyed said they were considering emigrating overseas, and 9.9% were going through the process of emigrating overseas, more than half of them combined. Among the respondents who are considering emigration and are going through immigration procedures, 91.3% said it was for “political and social reasons” and 80% said they would leave Hong Kong within two years.

Hong Kong Nurses Association Chairman Yuen Chi-man described the situation as if back in 1997 before the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong. The Association said that over the years, Hong Kong nurses have been in short supply, the migration of nurses overseas will seriously affect the supply of nurses in Hong Kong and the loss of nursing professionals, in addition to causing a shortage of young people in the nursing industry, the long-term impact on the quality of medical care services and Hong Kong.

In fact, it is easier for health care professionals to emigrate overseas than other professions, and many developed countries have a great demand for health care manpower.
