On Thursday (Jan. 7), U.S. President Donald Trump (Trump) made a video address on Twitter. Trump began by condemning the violence at the Capitol, stressing that America must always be a nation of laws. He also said he must “revive the sacred bonds of love and loyalty that bind us together as one family of nations.
Here is the text of Trump’s video address.
I want to begin by talking about the heinous attack on the U.S. Capitol, and like all Americans, I am outraged by the violence, lawlessness and chaos. I immediately deployed the National Guard and federal law enforcement to protect the building (the Capitol) and evict the intruders.
America must always be a nation of laws, and the protesters who invaded the Capitol tarnished American democracy. Those who exercise violence and vandalism, you do not represent our country; those who break the law, you will pay the price.
We just had a heated election and emotions are running high, but now we must cool down and restore calm. We must continue the unfinished business of America, and my campaign has vigorously pursued every legal avenue to contest the election results, with my sole goal of ensuring the integrity of the election. In this way, I am defending American democracy. I continue to believe that we must reform our election laws to verify the identity and eligibility of all voters and to ensure (the people’s) confidence and trust in future elections.
Now that Congress has certified the (election) results, a new administration will be inaugurated on Jan. 20. My focus now is to ensure a smooth, orderly and seamless transition of power. This is a time for healing and healing.
The year 2020 is challenging for people, with a heinous epidemic that has turned our lives upside down, quarantined millions, devastated our economy and claimed countless lives.
Overcoming the epidemic and rebuilding the greatest economy on earth will require a concerted effort by all of us and a renewed emphasis on the values of patriotism, faith, charitable community, community and family. We must revitalize the sacred love and loyalty that will unite us as one family. It has been the honor of my life to serve as president of the United States of America as a citizen. My wonderful supporters, I know you are disappointed, but I also want you to know that our incredible journey has only just begun!
Thank you, God bless you, and God bless America.
