British health care providers and health care workers said that the number of confirmed coronavirus disease (COVID-19) 2019 surge, the health care system is afraid of overload, major hospitals face bed shortage dilemma.

The U.K. reported yesterday that more than 62,000 new cases were confirmed in the past 24 hours, with a rapid increase in confirmed cases outside of southeast England. The British variant of the virus was first discovered in southeast England.

More than 30,000 people are currently being treated in British hospitals for the disease, up from the peak of the first wave of the outbreak.

Chris Hopson, chief executive of NHS Providers, which represents health care providers in England, said the surge in confirmed cases has forced hospital executives to consider transferring some inpatients to nursing homes.

Hopson told BBC Radio, “Over the past week we’ve seen an additional 5,000 patients admitted to hospital with 2019 coronavirus disease, the equivalent of 10 hospital beds… so it’s a really big challenge.”

He added that hospital executives “are aware that there are some extra beds in the nursing home and they are consulting with nursing home colleagues to see if they can use those beds.”
