USU professor: Who benefited from the Capitol riots?

Trump supporters hold a “Stop Election Theft” rally in front of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.

On Wednesday (6), a joint session of the U.S. Congress certified the presidential election results, but the session was interrupted when a group of protesters stormed the Capitol during the meeting. Left media took the opportunity to pressure President Trump and lawmakers planning to challenge the electoral college vote in the disputed state.

In response, Jay Richards, a research assistant professor at The Catholic University of America, asked his question: Who were the biggest beneficiaries of the Capitol riots?

At the time, the House and Senate were debating Republican objections to the results of Arizona’s Electoral College vote.

Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs (R) expressed concern about his state’s electoral votes. He even showed something that shouldn’t have existed: a stack of voter registrations that were taken after the legal deadline in the Grand Canyon area. Trump supporters have been hoping for weeks that this evidence would be made public.

Is it shocking that protesters are storming the Capitol at such a critical time, when these people are undermining exactly what they want to do?

Professor Richards asks, “One question, who was the biggest beneficiary of a crowd identified as supporting ‘Make America Great Again’ (MAGA) and Trump storming the U.S. Capitol, with related footage being broadcast across the country and the world?”

Richards noted that a large number of Trump supporters were outside and did not clash with police in order to storm the Capitol.

“The truth is, we don’t know at this point exactly who was storming the Capitol. We know that there are hundreds of thousands of Trump supporters out there, and they didn’t do it.” Richards cautioned that until more is known, it might be prudent to determine exactly who is doing this.

Sarah Palin, the former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee, was outraged by the way the media covered the protesters in Washington, D.C. She shared a photo of a bare-chested man in a strange costume standing with several other people. Palin stressed that they needed to be identified first.

Palin tweeted, “Media: Stop labeling the protesters in Washington as ‘conservatives, Republicans, Tea Partiers, Trump supporters,’ etc. Investigate who these people are and they will choose a group of clearly leaderless, crazy people to create a perception of condoning violence. Say no more, and you will find that fake Washington ‘patriots’ are being used as planted by hypocrites.”
